What To Look For

With so many tarot decks on the market, there are a few things to look for when you’re choosing your first tarot deck. One important thing to look at is how easy it will be to understand the cards, and how well you identify with them.

As a beginner, it can be difficult to actually be able to understand what’s going on in the cards. So how to choose a tarot deck? Either pick one that has imagery you can really relate to, or you could go for one of the more traditional cards.

You might find that when you buy another tarot deck, you might have to relearn some of the card meanings because the cards look so different! Each deck tells a slightly different story; it’s up to you to figure out what that story means compared to other decks.

Here are some options to give you an idea of choosing your first tarot deck!

Picking The Safe Choice

One option you could go for with a tarot deck is to pick the more traditional Lenormand tarot deck. Or the very similar Modern Witch tarot deck.

The vast majority of tarot books and meanings of the cards are written based off these cards, so if you’re looking for a tarot deck that you can easily glance at the picture on the card and see the same image on the book you’re reading, choose the Modern Witch or Traditional Lenormand deck.

Another way to pick a deck is to look for the ones that are really popular right now. It’s likely you’ll be able to find a lot of people talking about the deck, and that means the deck will usually have good instructions to go along with it!

These decks are popular for a reason. Often they have good imagery to be able to understand quickly, or gain your own sense of understanding.

The one that I really love that is very popular right now is the Light Seers Deck. Just be sure to get one with the hard case and included book! Any of the others for sale are forgeries.

Picking a Deck That Calls To You

This is how I chose my first two decks. Picking the tarot deck that calls to you. Whether you’re at a shop and see the deck, or scrolling Instagram and find a tarot deck calls to you.

One thing I like to do when I’m looking at a deck in store is to search it on Instagram. Most of the time each tarot deck has it’s own hashtag, so just search for it and see if you like the cards!

Decks To Avoid

These are only decks to avoid if you’re very new to tarot. I would avoid decks that have very minimal imagery for your first deck. Or ones that you can’t related to the tarot cards. It’ll lead to having to memorize the card meanings rather than being able to look at the cards and sort of come to your own understanding.

For me, one tarot deck that has minimal imagery that I would have struggled learning if I was brand new to tarot is the Prism Tarot deck. It’s beautiful, but doesn’t have a lot to look on the cards for clues as to what it means.

So How To Choose a Tarot Deck?

Hopefully the ideas above are a good starting point on getting you to choose your first deck!

Remember, ultimately it’s up to you to decide which one to choose, and follow your gut. The more you identify with the cards, the more likely you’ll keep practicing tarot!

Now go get a tarot deck and try some tarot spreads!
